Arlington High School has defied the doubters by securing a coveted spot in the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs for the second consecutive year. This achievement underscores the program's remarkable consistency and ability to reload despite significant challenges. Entering the 2025 season, many people predicted a downturn for the Lions.
They faced a new, more competitive league and graduated a large class of impactful seniors, including the 2024 Gatorade Player of the Year, Javier Hernandez. Junior Hugo Chavez stepped into the void left by last year's grads this season and led the Lions with 19 goals and 14 assists.
The Open Division is a "best of the best" competition. Arlington's inclusion demonstrates that they are among the elite programs in the region. This accomplishment reflects the players' and coaching staff's hard work and dedication and solidifies Arlington's prep powerhouse status.
"This is a testament to the type of student-athletes we have in our community and program," said Arlington soccer coach Kevin Watson. "I'm so proud of the guys for changing the narrative and showcasing our team DNA and culture. To be invited back to the Open Division is an honor, as we join Mater Dei, JSerra, and Mira Costa HS as the only four high school programs in the southern section to be involved in the Open Division in its first two years. We understand the tall task we have at hand with the #1 team in California and in the country, JSerra Catholic School, but we are going to prepare and battle with the intention to make Riverside proud."
The Open Division playoff starts here in Riverside in the battle of the Lions. The 8th-seeded Arlington Lions face the #1 JSerra Lions. The first leg of the CIF Open Division Quarterfinals is set for Thursday, February 13th, at 6:00 p.m. at Arlington HS.
