Unmasking Strength: Rewriting the Rules of Masculinity
In honor of Black History Month, join Blacklandia at the Riverside Main Library Community Room on Thursday, February 6, at 6:30 PM (doors open at 6:00) for a crucial conversation about masculinity. Four African American writers, James Coats, Richard Allen May III, Ipyani Lockert, and James Woods, will explore the evolving landscape of masculinity, particularly for Black men navigating the intersection of patriarchy, racism, and classism. They'll delve into their personal experiences, sharing what masculinity looked like growing up and how it has changed. The authors will also discuss the importance of addressing these issues in their writing, from Coats' impactful poetry to May's insightful essays, and highlight their community work empowering young Black men. This event offers a unique opportunity to engage with these important voices and reflect on the complexities of masculinity in today's society. This event is supported in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency. Learn more at www.arts.ca.gov.

Wild Seeds on the Beach documents a writing retreat for Black women. Hosted by Jamii Publishing in partnership with Wild Seed Poetry and Arts Collective and funded by the California Arts Council, the retreat (May 24-27, 2024) brought together 12 talented poets and writers. Through writing workshops, collaborative discussions, and individual reflection, these women explored their craft and forged lasting connections. The retreat was documented through evocative photography, capturing the joy, creativity, and sisterhood that blossomed during the program.

This exhibition, curated by Lisa Henry, serves as a visual testament to the thriving yet often overlooked community of Black women writers in the Inland Empire. Henry's vision is to [insert curator's vision here - e.g., "celebrate the diverse voices and experiences of these writers, offering a glimpse into their creative process and the power of their words." The photographs, alongside excerpts from the writers' work, create a compelling narrative of resilience, inspiration, and artistic expression.

Curated by the late Douglas McCulloh, Ansel Adams: Lost in the Wilderness showcases Ansel Adams' work in the 1960's. He was given a six-year commission by the University of California to document their campuses.  Far from the grand serenity for which he was known, college campuses in the '60s were tumultuous and even violent places, an environment where Adams was noticeably uncomfortable. Come preview the exhibit, for free, during Artswalk in preparation for the California Museum of Photography March 22 reception.
