Neighbor of the Week: Michael J. Elderman
Each week, we will introduce a new neighbor. This is not a who's who list. These are regular Riversiders doing exceptional things.
The end of the academic year marked the beginning of a new era on campus.
In a historic appointment, La Sierra University has named Dr. Christon Arthur as its first Black president in its nearly 102-year history. The announcement was made following a brief but comprehensive search process by the university’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Arthur, who officially assumed the role on July 1, 2024, had already begun making his mark by presiding over the university's early commencement ceremony on June 16, 2024.
Dr. Arthur’s selection is a landmark decision for La Sierra University. His extensive background in educational administration, having served as the provost of Andrews University in Michigan and as dean of the School of Graduate Studies & Research at Andrews, makes him exceptionally well-suited for his new role. Dr. Arthur also brings experience as an associate professor of educational administration at Tennessee State University, and his academic credentials include degrees from Andrews and Harvard Universities.
The early commencement ceremony, a celebrated tradition at La Sierra University, provided the perfect platform for Dr. Arthur to connect with the graduating class and the university community. In his speech titled "Your Time to Shine," Dr. Arthur urged the graduates to stay attuned to God's guidance and not to become consumed by their successes. "God has a future for you that's bigger than your circumstances," he said. "Whatever dream you may have for your life, leave room in your plans so that God can act and make His plans for you a reality."
La Sierra University Board Chair Dr. Bradford C. Newton expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Arthur’s appointment, highlighting his "remarkable breadth of experiences and insights into many aspects of educational leadership." Dr. Newton added, "We look forward to working with him as the university continues to chart an upward path following the short-term strategic plan that has been developed, and we anticipate a bright future for years to come under Dr. Arthur’s skillful guidance."
Dr. Arthur spoke of his honor and excitement at joining La Sierra University. “It is the joy and honor of my life to be able to accept the invitation to join this illustrious La Sierra University,” he said. “I’m fully confident that God will lead, guide, and direct us. I’m placing the future in God's hands to help La Sierra become all that God has called it to become.”
As La Sierra University welcomes Dr. Arthur, the community is optimistic about the fresh perspectives and visionary leadership he brings. His inaugural commencement ceremony as president-elect marks the beginning of what promises to be a transformative era for the institution.
