Echo Let Go

A prompt to encourage your practice of creativity this week from Riversider and local author Larry Burns.

Welcome back, you effervescent creatives! Last week, we embraced the momentary beauty of bubbles, capturing their fleeting forms and exploring their science-y secrets. Did you compose a bubble symphony that echoed with pops and hisses, or perhaps create a meditation that transported you to a state of mindful tranquility? Maybe you even gave yourself a crash course in the physics of bubbles, discovering the balance of forces that create these shimmering spheres. Even if all you did was draw a warm bubble bath and close yourself off from the world for a bit, I hope the time you took just to feed your creative side was uplifting.

For this week’s creative nudge, we're tuning in our bodies to experience the fascinating frequencies of echoes. These reverberating sounds, bouncing off surfaces and boomeranging back into our bodies, create a sense of depth, space, and mystery. Think back to yelling and running as a kid in large open spaces where your voice could ring out. Watching someone shout into the void from a mountain peak (or even from the porch) can be a sensory-rich experience.

While echoes are often associated with grand spaces and natural wonders, they can also be found in everyday environments. How many movies have you watched with the tell-tale echo of footsteps in an empty hallway? Or what about the way you feel when your water-closet moments reverberate in a tiled public bathroom? Echoes have a way of making us laugh, cringe, or feel alive. And the best part about them is that all those reflections come from us and return to us.

So, open your ears, but listen with your whole body. Allow the echoes to lead you on a journey of sonic exploration and creative expression via one or more of these auditory exercises:

  • Give a Hoot: Find a space with interesting acoustics—like a sewer pipe, an airplane terminal, or one of those secret tunnels that run from the Mission Inn  to Mt. Rubidoux! Make a variety of sounds—clapping, singing, speaking—and pay attention to how the echoes change depending on the shape of the space they’re made in. Create an "echo map" of the space, noting the different qualities of the reverberations.
  • 36 (Echo) Chambers: Construct an echo chamber—but not from social media and cable news! Instead, make your own echo chamber using a cardboard box or a large container. Experiment with different materials to line the inside of the chamber, such as fabric, foam, or even crumpled paper. It’s your echo chamber; fill it with whatever you want.
  • Epic Echo: Imagine a story or poem inspired by an echo. Perhaps it's the tale of a lost voice or a message carried across vast distances. Consider the echo as a metaphor for memory, longing, or the persistence of the past.
  • Echo Gecko: Find a quiet place supportive of stillness or rest, such as a park with trees or a room with high ceilings. Close your eyes like a lizard in warm sunshine, noticing the subtle echoes that linger in the air. Let these reverberations guide you into a state of deep listening and mindful awareness.

As we engage with these creative exercises, let's appreciate the echo's ability to expand our perception of sound, space, and time. Echoes can reveal hidden dimensions, amplify our voices, and connect us to the world around us in new and surprising ways.

Did you know that there's an urban myth that a duck's quack doesn't echo? While this isn't scientifically true (all sounds create echoes under the right conditions), it's a fun reminder that even the most familiar sounds can hold hidden surprises and spark our curiosity.

The next time you hear an echo, take a moment to appreciate its beauty, its mystery, and the creative possibilities it symbolizes. Just like the echo, our own creativity can reverberate through time, leaving a lasting impact on the world around us.
