Riverside Closes Out Black History Month Atop Mount Rubidoux with a Historic Event
A tablet commemorating Booker T. Washington’s visit to The Mount will be dedicated in a grand ceremony near the summit.
Crooks is the last standing skateboard shop in Riverside and one of the longest-operating retail shops Downtown.
This Saturday, February 15, is Skate Shop Day. A day dedicated to supporting local, independent skateboard shops. Riverside has had plenty of skateboard shops over the years, but at the moment, there is only one independent skate shop in town.
Crooks Skateboards has been at their newest location on Lemon between 9th and University for only a short time, but Allen Lusk and the Crooks crew have been doing it for almost a quarter century. That puts Crooks as one of the most durable retail shops in Riverside.
As much a clubhouse as it is a store, Crooks serves as a hub for local skaters and people from out of town coming in to skate Riverside's many local spots. Crooks is a full-service shop selling decks, trucks, and wheels by some of the most highly regarded brands in the industry, like Creature, Baker, Spitfire Wheels, and Independent Trucks.
Crooks sells more than skateboards. Apparel is a big part of skateboarding culture, and Crooks sells some of the more popular brands in shoes and clothing, including Volcom and Vans. Crooks is also the only Nike SB Orange Label dealer in the area, which means there are certain shoe and clothing releases that can't be found anywhere else in town. Lusk Says, "February 15 is Skate Shop Day; we will have special releases, signings, and events at the shop all day."
Even if you can't kickflip, you can still support local small businesses. A Crooks, shop-brand, tee shirt or hat will help you look like a local and it will really help Allen and the Crooks crew keep the clubhouse open for the time being.
