Detail of Angels’ Trumpets, Ada M. Passaro

Friday Gazette: October 18, 2024

The BEST part of this job is meeting people. As Community Editor, my task is to find people doing wonderful things in Riverside. Whether it be in the non-profit community or the arts, I get to seek the sources of light in the city, and I can’t imagine a better job. Recently, a friend of the Gazette, Sue Mitchell, introduced me to Ada M. Passaro.

Ada is a master of pastels and a true shining light. She was a designer and sign painter but did not take on pastels until she was 80 years old. The world she makes on canvas is pillowy, with soft, impossibly quiet, and warm landscapes. Ada is a member of RCAA and her pastel work is on display at the gallery on Lemon through October 26. The gallery is hosting a reception in honor of her work and 100th birthday on Saturday, October 19, from 3–6 pm. Please go visit Ada and support her work and the RCAA Gallery.

PS. We need your help! If you or a neighbor have an incredible Halloween display, snap a pic and send it to us with an address.

EDUCATION

Riverside Arts Magnet Festival of the Arts Highlights Students’ Talents

Riverside Arts Magnet held its annual Festival of the Arts on Tuesday, October 15. Riverside Arts Magnet is a public fine arts high school on the Ramona High School campus. Students complete the standard high school curriculum while participating in various arts-related programs. Everything from the fine arts, like painting and dance, to technical focuses, like television production.

Beyond the arts programs offered at traditional campuses, Riverside Arts Magnet allows students to participate in more groups and projects. There are five choirs and visual art focuses, such as ceramics and studio art. Several groups were performing at the Festival. Several students quickly changed from formal show choir to musical theater performances of RENT. There were Ballet Folklorico dancers, visual arts exhibits, and stations for the student-managed wardrobe department.

Penrose Record Room Marks One Year Anniversary

The celebration includes live performances, new merchandise, and prizes.

The Penrose Record Room. 3485 University. (Ken Crawford)

Everybody loves a birthday party. This weekend, October 19th and 20th, the party is at the Penrose Record Room. There will be live performances, prizes, new records, and plenty of cool-kid-certified Penrose merchandise. If you haven’t been by, this is your last chance to get the “I was there when...” credibility. The Penrose Records artists are incredible, and witnessing a live performance from among the stacks is something special.

The Penrose Record room looks like it’s been around a while. It might surprise many of you that they are celebrating the end of only their first year of selling records in the basement of the Life Arts Building. I am old enough that the oldies stations are full of music recorded when I was an adult, so one year seems like an easy feat. It isn’t. Just being there at all is an accomplishment.

Ghost Walk: Nevermore Combines Scary Stories with a Frightening Festival

The Festival at White Park serves as a jumping-off point for the scary story tour of Downtown.

Ghost Walk has become an October staple downtown. It started a couple of decades ago with local actors and authors telling scary stories, either handed down or written for the event, in the spaces where the stories were set. It was a mix of chills and thrills and a rare opportunity to see some of the city's basements, staircases, back alleys, and nooks that may not always be accessible.

The Ghost Walk has grown into a two-day festival on October 25th and 26th in White Park. "Ghost Walk has been such a special part of California Riverside Ballet for over 30 years," says Susan Anderson of California Riverside Ballet, a host of the event. "The ability to bring the arts community together in Riverside is very important to us, and even more important is working with our local students to bring out their love of theater, dance, and visual arts with this spooky tradition." Ghost Walk Riverside – Nevermore is inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe and the Addams Family's Wednesday. Along with the on-site tours, the event has expanded to include a carnival.
