Come and knock on our door! Last week, we waltzed into a world of creative possibilities wielding doorknobs. What did you gain by exploring their tactile qualities, symbolic meanings, or literary potential? Did you create a melodic doorknob windchime or capture the intricate details of doorknobs through photography? Maybe you achieved some decorative alchemy and turned a doorknob into a doorstop! Whichever way things turned out, I hope the result opened your day to more creative experiences.

For this week's creative nudge, we're stepping into the realm of shoelaces; they're a funky and flexible thing always close at hand (foot). Few things are more frustrating than an untied shoelace, but you'll want to shake those laces loose for today's creative flex time activity. Consider this your excuse to finally replace those old laces on the shoes you still love.  Feel free to look beyond your footwear for today's creative dare – drawstrings, purse strings, or any spaghetti-shaped things will do.

Whether they're the classic fat cotton laces from your oldest sneakers, the neon nylon laces from your hiking boots, or even those silly ones you got as a stocking stuffer, it's time to tie ourselves up in several minutes of creative contemplation. If we're lucky, we might create a thing that ties together imagination, expression, and a touch of playful exploration using one or more of these creative activities:

  1. Tread Thread: Repurpose busted shoelaces into intricate woven creations. Try different braiding and knotting techniques to create patterns, textures, and even three-dimensional structures. Display your woven wonder as a wall hanging or doorknob accessory.
  2. Shoelace Script: Use shoelaces to form cursive letters and words. Capture your typography through photography or create stop-motion animations that bring your words to life.
  3. Lace Paint: Replace your paintbrushes with shoelaces. Apply paint to the canvas by slinging or dripping it.  Arrange to create an abstract color palette to represent different aspects of yourself, such as your hobbies, your emotions, or your aspirations.
  4. Lace Chase: Challenge yourself to a shoelace-tying contest, invent a new shoelace-tying technique, or create a game. Pull your friends and family in a shoelace-themed scavenger hunt or a quick collaborative art project.
  5. One foot Kicking: Use shoelaces as a tool for mindfulness and relaxation. Focus on the tactile sensations of the laces as you tie and untie them, paying attention to the textures, the tension, and the rhythmic movements. Use this mindful activity to center yourself, reduce stress, and enhance your focus.

Footnote: Arguing about how to tie a shoelace correctly does not count as a creative activity.

As we engage with these creative exercises, let's appreciate the shoelace's ability to keep us steady and support our busy days. They can be used to express our individuality, connect with our inner child, and explore new ways of seeing and interacting with the world around us.

So, the next time you're faced with the hassle of an untied shoe, take a moment to appreciate their versatility, their strength, and the creative spark they can ignite. I'm confident we learned something valuable with all those hours spent learning to tie shoelaces in grade school. Just like the shoelace, we, too, can connect creatively, support what matters to us, and tie together the different threads of our lives to create something beautiful and meaningful.
