A collection of historic Mission Inn artifacts will go under the hammer Saturday, March 29 at 10 a.m. at Redlands Antique Auction, located at 1547 Park Avenue in Redlands, California. The auction features items that have been out of public view for decades, including bells from around the world, small ephemera, and several statues connected to Riverside's architectural landmark.

According to Roy Jameson, owner of Redlands Antique Auction, the collection has generated significant interest since being listed six weeks ago. He notes that many inquiries have been about items featuring the raincross symbol, though such pieces don't appear to be a big part of the collection. Despite this, enthusiasm remains high among collectors and local history buffs.

Interested bidders and curious onlookers can preview the items Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the auction house. Staff will be available to answer questions about the provenance and historical significance of specific pieces.

The collection's journey has been long. According to auction officials, the artifacts are believed to have left Riverside's iconic hotel during Benjamin Swig's ownership period, long before the current Mission Inn management or Foundation's involvement. After moving across the country, the items spent the last seven years in storage in San Bernardino before surfacing at this estate sale.

"It's a private collection that's been hidden for decades. From what I've been told, whoever owned it has passed away," said Jenn Gamble, President of the Mission Inn Foundation. She noted that these items left the property many decades ago through private channels without connection to today's Mission Inn operations.

The collection offers a rare glimpse into the extensive international artifacts gathered by Mission Inn founder Frank Miller, known for his world travels and passion for collecting architectural and cultural items. Miller incorporated these influences into the Mission Inn's eclectic design.

For Riversiders, this auction represents a unique opportunity to reclaim pieces of the city's architectural and cultural heritage. Historians suggest that some items may have been part of Miller's original vision for the hotel, offering valuable insights into his artistic influences and the Mission Inn's early development.

Auction officials expect competitive bidding, particularly for the larger statues and more ornate bells. However, they note that pieces will be available across various price points, making the auction accessible to serious collectors and those interested in owning a small piece of local history.

More information: The auction begins at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 29, at Redlands Antique Auction, 1547 Park Avenue, Redlands. Item previews are available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Staff will be on hand to answer questions.
