Local middle school team to host showcase before championship competition.
The Indoor Percussion ensemble from Frank Augustus Miller Middle School took first place at the Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC) semi-finals on April 5.
The 21-member team performed their 2025 season show titled "Space Mission," earning top honors at the competition.
"Indoor percussion is a significant commitment for the students. In addition to their regular school day, they rehearse 5–8 hours per week after school," said Susan Olsen, director. "They have been working together since September to hone their percussion skills and began learning their show in December. Saturday competition days are generally 10 hours long, usually beginning by 6 a.m., when students begin loading their equipment on a truck to travel to locations in Southern California to compete. Championships is the culmination of their hard work and dedication."
The ensemble will showcase their award-winning performance at an upcoming Percussion and Color Guard event at Miller Middle School. The showcase is free and open to the public, featuring performances from Miller, Arlington High School, and Martin Luther King High School percussion and color guard teams.
Following this event, the Miller ensemble will compete in the WGASC Championships on Saturday, April 26, at Edison High School in Huntington Beach.
Community members are encouraged to attend the upcoming showcase at Miller Middle School, 17925 Krameria, on Tuesday, April 15, at 6 p.m. to support these young performers before they head to championships later this month.
