RAM/CHEECH Update 8/14

Plenty of change, plenty still to see at The Riverside Art Museum and The Cheech Center.

RAM/CHEECH Update 8/14
(Ken Crawford)

Many of the exhibits at RAM and the Cheech are in transition. We are looking forward to new art in the coming months. There is still plenty to see, and on Sundays, both museums are free to admission through September 1.

 At The Cheech

  • Make sure to see the ensemble show Hogar Dulce Hogar (Home Sweet Home), curated by Cesar Garcia. Eighteen local artists offer their take on the changing notion of home in an increasingly transient world.
  • There has also been a recent reset of Cheech’s personal collection on the ground floor gallery.

At The Riverside Art Museum

  • Go and see the revisiting of Sheila Pree Bright: Plastic Bodies. The value of her critical view of culture and bodies has reemerged in light of the popularity of the Barbie movie. Despite the seriousness of the theme, the exhibit's objects are fun and nostalgic.
  • The building that houses The RAM is one of the most striking structures in the city. Designed by Julia Morgan in 1929 as a YWCA, it has housed the Riverside Art Museum since 1967. There is an excellent exhibit about Morgan and the building on Mission Inn and Ninth.

Events

  • It’s time to get tickets for the annual Pachuco Ball. The Ball is back at the Lake Perris Fairgrounds on August 24. Put on your best Zoot Suit and show off your strut at one of the year’s most anticipated events.
  • Division 9 Gallery owner Cosmé Cordova will host a framing class at the Cheech on August 28. It is open to the public and free to attend, but space is limited, and registration is required.
