First person of color to lead district leaves legacy of equity and excellence after 28-year career
Renee Hill, Superintendent of Riverside Unified School District (RUSD), announced her retirement Thursday afternoon, February 20, 2025, effective July, concluding a 28-year career with the district. Hill, the first person of color to hold the top position, has served as superintendent since 2021.
"Ms. Hill has dedicated her life to public education and her community in Riverside for decades in every role she's served in Riverside Unified School District. The Board of Education is forever grateful for Ms. Hill's unwavering commitment to providing support to students, their families, and our educators," RUSD Board Trustee Brent Lee said in a statement Thursday evening. "Her positive impact on public education will leave a lasting legacy in our district. We're excited to have Ms. Hill through the end of the school year and continue working towards our goals of serving all our students."
While focusing on student achievement, she maintained the support of RUSD teachers. Laura Boling, President of the Riverside City Teacher's Association, said of Superintendent Hill, "She always put students first. She listened to all my concerns for all teachers."
Under Hill's leadership, Riverside Schools witnessed significant achievements. The district saw a notable increase in graduation rates, particularly among historically underserved student populations, with a 5% improvement. Furthermore, Riverside STEM Academy earned national recognition, achieving the No. 1 ranking in California and No. 10 nationwide by U.S. News & World Report in rankings released Wednesday, May 8, 2024. The district also garnered consistent recognition for its commitment to excellence, receiving a California School Boards Association's Golden Bell Award for the past five years for various innovative programs.
Central to Hill's vision was the implementation of the C.A.R.E. initiative. This comprehensive program focused on four key pillars: Care, addressing students' social-emotional well-being; Academic Achievement, promoting personalized learning plans; Reducing Service Gaps, expanding access to vital resources; and Excellence Every Time, fostering continuous professional development for staff. C.A.R.E. aimed to create a supportive and enriching learning environment where every student could reach their full potential.
Hill's leadership extended beyond academic achievements. She navigated the complex challenges facing education in recent years, including debates surrounding curriculum transparency and student rights, particularly during the turbulent period of the COVID-19 pandemic. She steered the district through these unprecedented times, balancing the needs of students, families, and staff.
While Hill's accomplishments are numerous, her legacy is also defined by her dedication to fostering a culture of inclusivity and support. She prioritized creating a learning environment where every student felt valued and empowered. Her commitment to closing achievement gaps and providing opportunities for all students has left an indelible mark on the Riverside community.
The district has announced its plans to conduct a nationwide search for Hill's successor. As she prepares to embark on this new chapter, Renee Hill leaves behind a legacy of transformative leadership, dedication, and impact on the lives of countless Riverside students.
