City seeks resident input on Northside development featuring Olympic-caliber sports facilities and affordable housing.
Residents will have an opportunity to learn about and provide input on the proposed $200 million Riverside Adventure Park and mixed-use town center development at a community meeting April 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Springbrook Clubhouse on Orange Street.
The 126-acre project would transform the former Riverside Golf Course in the Northside neighborhood, vacant since 2009, into a recreational destination and mixed-use development.
"It's a great chance to learn about this potential project and connect with city officials and developers," Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said.
City representatives and the development team from Adrenaline Sports Resorts Collaborative (ASRC) will attend to answer questions and address community concerns about the project, which received unanimous City Council approval for exclusive negotiations in February.
The development is divided into two components, according to city documents. An 85-acre adventure center would feature free public amenities including biking and hiking trails, climbing areas and play spaces. Paid attractions would include a whitewater rafting course designed to Olympic standards, wave lagoon, surf park, ziplines, rope courses and sport climbing walls, with discounts planned for Riverside residents.
The 41-acre mixed-use town center would include a grocery store — a long-sought amenity for the Northside area — along with retail spaces, restaurants, offices, a hotel and 722 multifamily residential units. At least 25% of the housing would be designated as affordable.
"The Northside neighborhood has historically been the neglected child of Riverside—lacking basic services like a grocery store, adequate infrastructure, and variety of recreational activities," Ward 1 Councilmember Philip Falcone said when the council approved negotiations with ASRC in February.
City officials project the development could create approximately 2,800 jobs and attract 500,000 visitors annually while saving the city the current $1.6 million yearly maintenance costs for the unused property.
The development site is bordered by Columbia Avenue, Orange Street, Main Street and Garner Road.
