Neighbor of the Week: Michael J. Elderman
Each week, we will introduce a new neighbor. This is not a who's who list. These are regular Riversiders doing exceptional things.
Riverside’s new fire chief was sworn in at the Fox Performing Arts Center, emphasizing service, honor, and courage, while the City Manager praised his leadership and community commitment.
Steve McKinster, Riverside’s new fire chief, was sworn in Wednesday at the Fox Performing Arts Center, stepping into the role after 25 years with the department.
McKinster brings 29 years of fire service experience to the position. He emerged as the top choice from a pool of 37 candidates in a national search.
During the ceremony, McKinster thanked his family, mentors, and colleagues. He reflected on his early days, saying, “I started as a 20-year-old paramedic with Good Human Ambulance at Old Station 5 back in 1995. I didn’t know much then, but what I did know is that this was the community I wanted to dedicate my career to.”
McKinster highlighted the department’s core values of service, honor, and courage, calling them essential to being a Riverside firefighter.
City Manager Mike Futrell praised McKinster’s selection, citing his dedication to Riverside, integrity, and understanding of community needs as key factors in his appointment to the role.
“McKinster is the right combination of leadership, management expertise, and professionalism to lead RFD moving forward,” Futrell said in a press release announcing McKinster’s appointment. “His commitment to Riverside, his integrity, and his understanding of this community’s needs set him apart as our department’s next chief.”
McKinster plans to focus on daily service while exploring future growth opportunities. He emphasized his commitment to making a positive impact and ensuring the safety of both department members and the community.
“We may not always agree, but we’ll respect each other’s opinions. That’s what builds a strong team,” McKinster added.
