Neighbor of the Week: Michael J. Elderman
Each week, we will introduce a new neighbor. This is not a who's who list. These are regular Riversiders doing exceptional things.
Emily, the youngest member of the Women’s Water Polo team, is looking to make a big impact.
The 2024 Olympics have had a lot of American star power. Simone Biles and Sha’Carri Richardson returned to form after troubles in Tokyo. Katie Ledecky continued dominating in the pool. The US Men’s Basketball squad is living up to the hype. Snoop Dogg and Flavor Flav have been almost everywhere leading the party for the Olympic athletes.
Understandably, Women’s Water Polo Driver Emily Ausmus, a Riversider, ML King grad, USC commit, and the youngest national squad member in attendance, has gone under the radar. NBC may only give her a casual mention, but we at the Gazette have been following her closely.
Emily scored a goal in the opening match against Greece and has contributed as a significant roleplayer on a stellar squad led by Maddie Musselman’s nine goals and Ashleigh Johnson’s incredible play in the box, making a solid case for her being the best goalkeeper in the world.
Emily and the US Women’s Water Polo team enter their Semifinal match against Australia on Thursday with a goal differential of 26, leading all squads. The game will be streamed on the Peacock app, and you can follow the team’s progress on the Olympic website. We wish the team the best and love having the opportunity to cheer on a Riversider deep-in Olympic tournament play.
