Sports Shorts: Something Different

Mid Season Major Sports Doldroms and a trip to the new happening place in town.

Sports Shorts: Something Different
The Farm House Collective will be showing sports events on their big screen in an environment for kid-friendly than a sports bar. (Ken Crawford)

The Farmhouse Collective, despite being only in its first phase of opening, has quickly become a popular gathering spot for Riverside families. I've visited several times since its opening a couple of weeks ago, even though many restaurants and stores aren't yet operational. This hasn't deterred families from showing up in good numbers. A notable feature of the Farmhouse scene is the abundance of parents with small children.

I scheduled a meeting with a fellow journalist at the Farmhouse on Tuesday for lunch and to discuss some local issues. As I was walking down the center pathway, I ran into Beverly Bailey, co-owner of the Collective.

She joined us briefly, and I made introductions to my colleague. We had come to watch the UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid and Arsenal. Though only a small crowd had assembled, it provided the perfect opportunity to discuss with Beverly how sports viewing as a community event fits into their vision for the space.

She said that sports are a big part of their future, including plans for college and professional football.

In this column, I've often emphasized how sports serve as a gateway to community for many people; whether through playing as a child or simply watching baseball with a parent. Beverly and the Bailey Family have scratched an itch by offering a spacious venue where locals can gather to watch their favorite teams and give their kids a place to safely play.It provides Riversiders with an affordable, safe way to capture the excitement of attending live sporting events.

Keep an eye on the Farmhouse Collective's upcoming calendar for watch events. For now, Lakers and Dodgers games. Invite your friends for wholesome community entertainment, tell them to bring the kids.
