Happy Sunday, Riverside!

Tomorrow is the Riverside African American Historical Society’s 30th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Walk. In my opinion, every Riversider should experience this at least once in their life. If you don’t have plans tomorrow, you can pre-register online or in person beginning at 8 a.m., when the walk kicks off at Bordwell Park.

COMMUNITY

Douglas McCulloh 1959-2025

Renowned photographer and curator championed local artists, leaves lasting impact on region's cultural landscape.

Few figures loomed as large over the art world in the Inland Empire than Douglas McCulloh. It is unfortunate news that we must mark his passing. Doug died on Sunday, January 5, after a brief illness at his home with his wife per his wishes.

Above all, Doug was an artist. He carried this role into all aspects of his life. Never being afraid to look at a situation with the curiosity and creativity that his art required. He would often bring this stance to his work as the Interim Executive Director at UCR ARTS: The California Museum of Photography and Culver Center for the Arts after having served as the museum's senior curator. He also served as a longtime artist representative to the board of the Riverside Art Museum and curated social justice-themed exhibitions for the Civil Rights Institute of Inland Southern California. At these and many other local institutions, his support burned brightly and will continue to better the local community.

NEIGHBOR OF THE WEEK

Neighbor of the Week: John "Riverside's Plumber" Dixon

Each week, we will introduce a new neighbor. This is not a who's who list. These are regular Riversiders doing exceptional things.

(Brenda Flowers)

John is a local fixture known for his plumbing skills and his passion for the history and culture of the Inland Empire. He became widely recognized as “Riverside’s Plumber.” His curiosity about the area’s past led him to explore local history, from the stories of decorated military heroes to the legacy of neon signs and the Riverside Smudgepots. An accidental music journalist as well, John is known for working hard, digging deep, and always keeping Riverside at the heart of everything he does.

FOOD & DRINK

Eat This, Riverside: 2024 Year In Review

We’re revisiting Seth’s 2024 highlights, from Kali Hathaway’s bagel journey to updates at Manna Grill, En La Birria, and more!

From fresh sushi to hearty Mexican cuisine, Eat This Riverside celebrated the diverse and delicious flavors of our local food scene in 2024. (Seth Zurer)

Man, oh, man! What a year 2024 was. At the end of January, the Gazette published the first of sixteen Eat This, Riverside columns I authored, each one a diary entry devoted to the latest food I felt enthusiastic about. So, for my January column in 2025, I revisited many of the places I featured last year to report on the latest developments in each story.

I’m looking forward to finding even more food topics I can be enthusiastic about in 2025! The long-awaited opening of Farmhouse Collective! The arrival downtown of the Slow Bloom / Hayet Albi worker-owned cooperative coffee croissant paradise! More unexpected treasures in mall food courts like Master Gan’s hand-pulled Lanzhou noodles. More quasi-legal backyard restaurants with soulful and delicious home cooking like En La Birria.

CREATIVE PROMPTS

Button, Button

A prompt to encourage your practice of creativity this week from Riversider and local author Larry Burns.

(Titus Pardee)

This week, we're fastening our attention on a small but mighty object that's often overlooked despite its ubiquitous presence: the button. These essential features, with their varied shapes, sizes, and materials, have been adorning our clothing and accessories for centuries. But beyond their practical function, buttons also hold a wealth of creative potential waiting to be unlocked.

From the smooth, round buttons on your classic winter coat to the intricate, textured buttons on a vintage blouse you found thrifting along Sunnyside Drive, buttons offer a tactile and visual feast for the senses. Their different materials, from shimmering pearl to rustic wood, invite us to explore their textures and colors, while their shapes, from simple circles to ornate designs, spark our imaginations and inspire new forms of expression.
