The Pardee family ofrenda; Happy DĆa de los Muertos weekend!

Sunday Gazette: November 3, 2024

Hello Riverside, and Happy Sunday!

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to each of the 89 readers who have participated in our second annual reader survey. This survey is important for two reasons:

  1. I want to know what you like about The Raincross Gazette and what we can do better. Feedback is oxygen for our work. Your input will help our team plan how to best serve you in the coming year.
  2. Your anonymous demographic information helps potential advertisers know the kind of people reading The Gazette, which in turn helps us keep The Gazette free for everyone.

This survey can take 5-8 minutes, so each subscriber who participates will be entered in a giveaway to win a gift basket with a $100 gift card from Ampersand Gifts and Goods in the Riverside Plaza.

Thank you for your time spent on this survey, and thank you in advance for bearing with us as we continue reminding you to participate before the survey closes on November 11 at midnight.

šŸ§”
Thank you to the Subscribers who became paid supporters this week: Robert L. Brown, William Ghazi, and Jimmy Von Bailey. Your ongoing financial support is vital to our success in serving Riverside with the news it deserves!

HISTORY

Banner of Bravery: Mission Innā€™s Tribute to WWI Heroes

The Mission Innā€™s tribute banner honors the World War I heroes connected to itā€™s history, keeping their stories alive over a century later.

(Authorā€™s Collection)

With Veterans Day coming up in a little over a week, we look back and observe how Frank A. Miller of the Mission Inn honored veterans who had a connection to the Inn and served in World War I. On February 1, 1919, Miller entertained many of those veterans in the refectory at the Mission Inn with a banquet and a program of toasts and recollections of the soldiersā€™ experiences. Seventy-five people attended the banquet, including the Miller family and the guests, and were seated at tables decorated with the national colors. Musical selections entertained the guests during dinner.

Not all veteran employees and family members were present, but fifteen were honored in a ā€œHeroes of the Mission Inn Bannerā€ displayed at the Inn. Some of these veterans honored by the Mission Inn are well-known, while some have no or very little-known information after 105 years. The picture of each honoree is set in a star with a gold braid around the photo. Here is a brief synopsis of these fourteen men and one woman.

NEIGHBOR OF THE WEEK

Neighbor of the Week: Cosme Cordova

Each week, we will introduce a new neighbor. This is not a who's who list. These are regular Riversiders doing exceptional things.

Cosme Cordova is a Riverside artist and cultural leader. In 1999, he founded Division 9 Gallery on Lemon and University. Cosmeā€™s influence extends beyond the gallery walls. He has played a major role in creating many of Riversideā€™s most cherished cultural events, including Dia de Los Muertos, Riverside ArtsWalk, and, most recently, the Mucho Gusto Fest. Beyond giving residents entertainment options, Cosme creates communities around his work. You can participate by simply attending, or you can find a way to contribute. You donā€™t need to be an artist to get involved.

CREATIVE PROMPTS

On the Bubble

A prompt to encourage your practice of creativity this week from Riversider and local author Larry Burns.

Bubbles in branches. (Reeve Pardee)

Welcome back, Thundercats! Last week, we draped ourselves in creativity with the versatile scarf, getting all tied up in its tactile wonders. Did you create a "scarfture" masterpiece that transformed your living room into a breezy art installation, or perhaps embark on a sensory journey guided by the textures of different fabrics between your fingers? Maybe you even rediscovered an old scarf, made up a story about it, and gave it to a friend who can use a smile going into the holiday season.

This week, we're embracing the ephemeral, the truly temporary. Our creative nudge this week is a squeaky clean soap bubble. These delicate spheres, shimmering with iridescent colors and floating on the breeze, are about to become our inspiration for a multi-sensory exploration of wonder, fragility, and fleeting beauty.

While blowing soap bubbles is a classic way to engage with these fleeting wonders, let's also look beyond the soapy sphere and discover bubbles in other forms. Notice the delicate air pockets in a loaf of freshly baked bread, the mesmerizing patterns in a lava lamp, or the frothy foam on your morning cappuccino. Even the natural world offers a plethora of bubble inspiration, from the glistening dewdrops on a spider web to the mesmerizing patterns of air bubbles trapped in ice.
