HISTORY

A Hidden History: Riverside’s Forgotten Fairgrounds

Riverside’s Fairgrounds Street is a reminder of the bustling county fairgrounds that once stood beneath the 60 Freeway, hosting fairs, races, and community events starting in 1914.

If you travel north out of downtown Riverside on Market Street, go past the entrance of Fairmount Park,  and you will see the old Union Pacific steam engine #6051. Then turn right on Fairmount Blvd, go under the 60 Freeway, and immediately turn left on the first street. As you turn, look at the name of this street – Fairgrounds Street.  What is the history and story behind this short street hidden along the freeway in an industrial area?

You need to go back 110 years to 1914 to discover the meaning behind this street name. In January 1914, the Riverside County Fair Association decided to purchase 41 ½ acres of land on the north side of Riverside from the Evans family for a new fairground. The site was along Crestmore Ave., just a short distance north of Fairmount Park. The purchase price was $12,750, or about $300 an acre. The Cresent City Railroad ran alongside the new site and provided great transportation for people to reach the fair.

NEIGHBOR OF THE WEEK

Neighbor of the Week: Sebraé Harris

Each week, we will introduce a new neighbor. This is not a who's who list. These are regular Riversiders doing exceptional things.

Sebraé Harris at his booth during October ArtsWalk. (Ken Crawford)

I'm an artist entrepreneur in the fields of traditional animation, Japanese manga, and cut-out paper theater. My Art is built and designed to create peace with a colorful imagination. Educating the beautiful wonders of faith and fun under a unified umbrella. I have worked and volunteered at the Riverside Art Museum (RAM) and Inlandia Institute, contributing to special projects and hosting Animation & Manga workshops. God continues to help make a path with & for me while accompanied by others' support. From age 4 to animating at 8, studying at RAM to graduating from Riverside City College (RCC) three times, having my manga published with Inlandia at 22, and finally doing a comic panel series for the Raincross Gazette. I thank God every day for all these things within my life of twenty years plus, and now, at 24, I'm just getting started.

My business, StarLite-Crystal Animation & Art Studio, works to spark a resurgence in the Classic Arts while creating new original stories based on and inspired by Riverside. The Vermillion-Speedateer and Citrus Bellé gave me the chance to creatively share the joy I've experienced here and inspire others to do the same. Riverside never had comic book superheroes before, so instead of waiting, I boldly created them myself. I'm the result of Riverside Art Museum, Inlandia Institute, and the Raincross Gazette's support for the local arts. My studio is my answer to giving back to the community, building careers & giving opportunities to express, educate & share the brewing imagination from the heart and soul within.

CREATIVE PROMPTS

Whistful Whistle

A prompt to encourage your practice of creativity this week from Riversider and local author Larry Burns.

This week, we're shifting our focus to an object that commands attention and signals transitions: the whistle. Whether it's the shrill call of a referee on the soccer field, the cheerful trill of a bird, or the sonic blast of a train telling you that you'll be late for work, the whistle's sound is both familiar and evocative. Beyond its auditory impact, the whistle offers a tactile experience, with its curves and edges and the varying pressure required to produce its signature sound.
